The play was indeed a sensational attraction. The eponymous protagonist of Glikl Hameln Demands Justice was one of the most renowned parts played by Ida Kamińska, who continued to perform it into the 1960s. Bauman’s play was inspired by the real-life memoirs of Glikl of Hameln, the daughter of a Jewish merchant from Hamburg, who lived at the turn of the 17th century. Her diaries are the only known Yiddish memoir written by a woman before 1900.
